Bits and atoms

Last week I was assinged at work to gather some general information about The center of bits and atoms. That time I had absolutely no idea of what that was. And the clear understanding didn't come across till today. I knew that it was kind of a scientific center founded in collaboration with MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and as it was said on its official website "a interdisciplinary initiative investigating the interface between computer science and physical science". Ok, immensely clear!
So I was waiting for my English class seating in not really cozy cafe and reading "Funky business". The chapter was again about the brains power dominating in nowadays corporations. About the Microsoft that has much bigger market value than General Motors with its uncountable buildings, warehouses and machinery. Because Microsoft is much more about brains. And then paragraph followed:
"Information is a new currency. That were the words of Nicolas Negropont from Media Lab of MIT, "we are mooving from world of atoms to the world of bits". We are mooving from the world with the muscule power on the first place to the world where intellect rules. Competition now is based on kilobytes, not kilograms".
Actually I hadn't any questions after that...

Again the match

Yesterday I ended listening "Delivering Happiness" by Tony Hsieh. I enjoyed the book very much, the exiting and explisit way it was written in. The author, founder of Zappos, Tony Hsieh chose really coherent way of presenting his story by design. He wanted to tell about himself, about his business in the way people would enjoy reading. And he succeed! The experience he went through can be very usefull for everyone of us and can put the spotlight on what is really significant in business. He pays a lot of attention to great customer service, to how reach the WOW effect with you clients. And I consider it is immensely important! You should treat people as you want to be treated, no matter if it's business or ordinary life. Unfortunately we experience lack of good customer service in Russia. Not some many companies carry about it. Pity...
But today I was pleasantly surprised when calling to Lufthansa! The operator was so kind and nice that I enjoyed negotiating and moreover of course all my problems were fixed in couple of minutes!

And yes! Of course about the match! I was reading (actually listening) the article where Tony was telling about his internship in Oracle. Few days later I was taking part in organizing a contest presentation for Russian students, arranged by Oracle. So I was attending the meeting with education development director from Oracle, promoting this event through our schools..And of course reminding about a funny match :)
Of course funny only for me, but I always have some special feeling when such matches happen)

Beautiful

Despite nasty rain I enjoyed my walk from work through the center with the most fascinating places around. I forgot how my city is great in the evening with all the lighting on. This was one of the moments when you realize our life is beautiful.

One more interesting match

As it often happens to me, again I've been watching and reading about the same thing in absolutely different sourses, but approximately at the same time. The last match is about developing Puerto Rico as a resort for americans in the middle of 20th century. For those who lately had a chance to evaluate "The Rum Diary", it's easy to guess what was the first sourse. The second is in "On Advertising" by Ogilvy. He was a real person who provided ads for Puerto Rico and, morever, successful ads. Who do you think was taking pictures for that campaings? One of my favourite photographers - Elliott Erwitt. The small world!

Go funky!

For quite a long time I was going to write at least couple of words about "Funky Business" book. I know it was written in faraway 2000, but it happened that i'm reading it only now. Still it is really up-to-date and actual, especially for our country, where everything is developing not as fast as in Sweden with its super high life quality levels. The book is really worth reading, after every next page you are thinking: "yes!it's just what is happening in our world! I always thought so, but didn't know how to express that in such explicit and logical way!" I enjoy reading every chapter, authors present thoughts in immensely interesting and witty manner. Moreover, the book is extremely quotable, and I already have some favourite thoughts.

Among them is one about how Karl Marx was right in his statement. He was claiming that workers should own the producer goods. And the truth is that we are owning it already for quite long time. And these means are human brains.

in these later days my hands have some strange flavour of spicy food, regardless to have been washed several times

mmm, or where to dine in Spb

I saw this place a lot of times passing by the neighbourhood near Ploshad' Vosstaniya. For the first time it caught my attention when we were arranging our turkish holidays in one of the travel agencies for summer 2010. We, together with my sister thought it was the nicest place, but then for no apparent reason we concidered it quite expencive, so we just forgot. Then later I was walking there and again the flowers around the entrance seemed so lovely and inviting. I thought - ok,next time...
Time passed. And yesterday we were meeting with girls from my previous work and by chance we turned up near that place. It turned out that everyone except me knew how amazing caffe Italia was.Needless to say, I know it now too. Great pasta, pizza and especially gelato! I enjoyed mint and tiramisu one, decorated with a lot of tasty sweet stuff. And after taking sparkling red wine we can't help taking two more!Waiters were so nice, mostly they were italians. Moreover, prices were nice too). Now I have two favourite diners: Zoom and of course CaffeItalia!

a small world

When people know each other in a city with 5 million population, you begin to feel ok about it. That's because you have been living here for all your life, went to school, graduated from university, had several works. That's just normal when it comes out that your new acquaintance knows some of your good friends.
But! When two people you know,of different nationalities, living in opposite parts of our earth, having nothing common, just meet when the chance is so scanty,  that's seams incredible. And you pretend that you're taking part in some movie, "The Truman show" for instance. You are shocked for a while. But later you get used. Because it's inexplicable, but our world is really so small.

I made it!

Today I was eventually made to go and evaluate the last work of Johnny Depp. And it's despite the fact that I'm not the greatest fan of this undoubtedly talanted actor and much more I was interested in "In Time" with Timberlake. Anyway, I enjoyed the film, couple of moments were really hilarious and I couldn't help laughing. The episode with inventive way of driving the destroyed car just provided a furror with audience. The end was a little bit controversal and still it's hard to believe that the script was written on the real story. It didn't meet my expectations, because I thought it would be much more dull. Of course, I can't put it in one row with the "Cocain", for example, but it a quite good film. Nevertheless, I anticipate I'll enjoy "In Time" much more!
